Hello You narrates a personal character accompanied by footage taken during a road trip to California in August 2019. This short film is a response to my parent’s divorce and the weight of emotions associated with massive life changes. I created this work as if I were speaking to an overwhelmed, stressed version of myself. This work expresses the importance of maintaining balance between one’s family dynamics and a healthy mental state. Themes and messages from this short film inspired later work in my B.F.A. thesis.
A large obstacle I overcame with this video project was communicating my personal narrative while captivating viewer’s attention and connecting with them on an emotional level. In order to appeal to wider audiences, I wrote and recorded a voice over that used non-specific language. Viewers are able to put themselves into the settings presented due to the narrations speaking to the audience directly.
